Sustainability Policy
Travelling Responsibly. Leaving a Legacy of Prosperity.
Effective Date: 1 July 2025
1. Our Commitment
At Thea Mondial Travel, sustainability is not a marketing statement — it is the foundation of how we operate. As a woman-led, locally owned DMC rooted in Uganda, we recognise that responsible tourism is inseparable from our identity as stewards of this land, its wildlife, and its communities.
This policy defines our commitments across three pillars: Environmental Stewardship, Social Equity, and Economic Empowerment. It aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC) criteria, the Uganda Tourism Board's ecotourism guidelines, and the Uganda Wildlife Authority's conservation framework.
2. Environmental Stewardship
2.1 Wildlife & Ecosystem Protection
- We operate strictly within Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) regulations for gorilla trekking, chimpanzee tracking, and all national park activities
- We enforce a strict no-feeding policy for all wildlife encounters and brief all clients on responsible wildlife interaction before any trek
- We do not partner with operators or lodges that engage in the capture, trade, or mistreatment of wild animals
- We adhere to minimum approach distances and time limits for all primate encounters
2.2 Low-Impact Operations
- We prioritise accommodation partners with verifiable environmental certifications or demonstrable eco-practices including solar energy, water conservation, and waste management
- We encourage clients to pack light, minimise single-use plastics, and use reusable water bottles — refill stations are standard in our partner lodges
- Our fleet of 4x4 vehicles undergoes regular maintenance to minimise emissions, and we plan itineraries to reduce unnecessary road kilometres
- Digital documentation is used in place of printed materials wherever possible
2.3 Carbon Consciousness
We acknowledge the environmental impact of air travel and encourage clients to consider carbon offsetting programmes. We are actively exploring a verified carbon offset partnership programme and will publish progress updates as this is formalised.
3. Social Equity & Community Empowerment
3.1 Women in Tourism
As a woman-led enterprise, gender equity is central to our mission. We actively:
- Create mentorship and training pathways for women entering the Ugandan tourism sector
- Design impact travel experiences that channel direct revenue to women-led community enterprises
3.2 Local Employment & Fair Labour
- 100% of our operational team are Ugandan nationals
- We pay guides, drivers, and all staff at or above the Living Wage benchmark of the region
- We provide team members with professional development opportunities, safety training, and health support
- We do not use child labour and comply fully with Uganda's Employment Act
3.3 Cultural Respect & Heritage Preservation
- We design Heritage experiences in close collaboration with community elders and cultural custodians
- Clients are fully briefed on local customs, dress codes, and photography etiquette before cultural visits
- A portion of all cultural experience fees is returned directly to the host community
4. Economic Empowerment
4.1 Localisation of the Tourism Value Chain
- We source food, crafts, and supplies from local producers and markets wherever logistically feasible
- We actively avoid directing client spending to non-local, internationally owned supply chains when comparable local alternatives exist
- We promote and sell authentic, locally made crafts and artisan products on guided tours
4.2 Community & Impact Travel
- Our Purposeful Volunteerism and Agricultural Learning Exchange programmes are designed to deliver genuine, lasting benefit — not performative voluntourism
- Community projects are identified in direct partnership with local organisations and NGOs
- We publish an annual impact summary detailing the number of community members benefited, women enterprises supported, and income generated
5. Responsible Partner Standards
We apply sustainability screening to all operational partners including lodges, camps, transport providers, and activity operators. Partners are assessed on:
- Environmental practices (waste, energy, water management)
- Labour standards and fair pay
- Community benefit and local procurement
- Wildlife and habitat protection measures
We reserve the right to discontinue partnerships that fall below our standards, and we communicate our requirements transparently at the outset of any commercial relationship.
6. Client Responsibility
We believe sustainable travel is a shared responsibility. We ask all clients to:
- Follow the guidance of their guide at all times in national parks and community settings
- Respect posted rules and regulations in protected areas
- Refrain from purchasing products made from endangered species or illegal wildlife products
- Engage with local communities with curiosity, humility, and respect
- Minimise waste, conserve water, and switch off lights and air conditioning when not in use at lodges
7. Continuous Improvement
Sustainability is a journey, not a destination. We commit to:
- Reviewing and updating this policy annually
- Setting measurable targets for each sustainability pillar
- Reporting openly on progress, including areas where we fall short
- Engaging staff, partners, and clients in ongoing dialogue about responsible travel
8. Contact & Feedback
We welcome dialogue on our sustainability practices. If you have concerns, suggestions, or would like to learn more about our impact programmes, please contact us:
